BSNL broadband set to get a quantum leap with upgrade

Broadband speeds provided by BSNL in Puducherry are set to increase significantly with a major network upgrade under way.
BSNL, which was delivering Internet access to customers through copper/fibre cable, has scaled up its broadband backbone from the existing speed of 10Gbps to 20 Gbps.

Eventually, this would be scaled up to 40 Gbps as BSNL migrates to a state-of-the-art technology, the MNG PAN — MPLS-TP (Multiprotocol Label Switching-Transport Profile), the Next Generation Packet Aggregation technology.
In terms of user experience in what has shaped up into a highly competitive market, MNG PAN technology affords browsing speeds that are dramatically higher than what DataOne subscribers have been accustomed to so far.
For instance, the initial slew of offers that ride on the new technology deliver speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps against the standard offering of 8 Mbps for a reasonably good data plan (such as the 499 or 599 BBG ULD combo plans).
Under the MNG PAN, BSNL is doling out a 777 Plan that offers 50 Mbps speed till 500 GB (2 Mbps speed over the fair usage threshold) while the 1,277 plan delivers 100 Mbps speed up to 750 GB and 2 Mbps beyond fair usage limits.
Besides, the default speed for all landline broadband customers on any monthly plan above ₹650 has been raised to 10 Mbps.
According to an official, users need not change existing modems to access the new technology.
The MNG PAN equipment was recently commissioned by Marshal Antony Leo, Chief General Manager, BSNL, Tamil Nadu circle in the presence of a host of officials including Jeyakumar Jayavelu, General Manager of BSNL, Puducherry.
According to officials, BSNL is in the process of taking fibre-based broadband across the Puducherry Secondary Switching Area (SSA) on a franchisee model basis. Recently, it has floated an Expression of Interest under the tender section of the TN Circle website.
BSNL is expecting to see subscriber growth in its broadband segment after the roll out of MNG PAN technology. It now has about 21,000 broadband users in Puducherry SSA.
Meanwhile, BSNL has already migrated 11 exchanges to the Next Generation Network (NGN) and the remaining 13 are set to be taken up for upgrade during the current fiscal.
