New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) In yet another move to keep Chinese technologies companies at bay, the Centre has cancelled the 4G upgradation tender for BSNL as it has decided to come up with fresh specifications for the upgrade process, sources said.

(BSNL) today cancelled the tender for 4G (fourth generation) network up-gradation and expansion, after the government in the recent past barred state-run telcos from sourcing equipment from Chinese players like Huawei and ZTE.

There are reports that there were complaints by homegrown companies who were demanding a fresh tender involving greater usage of Make in India technology.

BSNL, MTNL cancel 4G network upgradation tenders

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) have cancelled tenders issued for the upgradation of 4G network across various circles.
The tender, floated on March 23, was marred in controversy with Indian operators stating that it did not support the government’s ‘Make in India’ policies.

BSNL, MTNL 4G tenders scrapped, likely to issue fresh ones excluding Chinese companies

New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) on Wednesday (July 1) cancelled their 4G up-gradation tenders issued in March 2020.

This decision taken by the two state-owned telecommunications service providers has come after the DoT decided to issue fresh specifications for the up-gradation process.

BSNL revamps broadband, FTTH plans and benefits in Andaman and Nicobar circles

Government-owned telco Bharat Sanchar NigamLimited (BSNL) has announced the revamp of broadband and Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) plans in Andaman and Nicobar islands. The revamped plans come at the exact price as before but with higher speeds and higher allowance of data, Telecom Talk noted.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has cancelled a tender for 4G upgrade after the Department of Telecom (DoT) asked the telecom operator to not use Chinese telecom gear, PTI reported citing an unidentified source. The telecom operator will now float a new tender which will largely focus on Make in India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to promote domestic manufacturing and pushes to make India atma nirbhar or self-reliant. Chinese equipment maker ZTE and Huawei are two of the major companies for supplying equipment.

NEW DELHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Wednesday cancelled the tender for the fourth generation (4G) network upgradation and expansion, after the government recently barred state-run telcos from sourcing equipment from Chinese players Huawei and ZTE.

"Tender for planning, engineering, supply, installation, testing commissioning and annual maintenance of 4G mobile network in the north, east, west and south zones of BSNL and Delhi and Mumbai LSA of MTNL on turnkey basis issued on March 23, 2020, is hereby canceled." the state-run telco in a notification said.

Telecom industry AGR grew 9.5% in FY3Q, due to price hikes: Trai

Kolkata: The telecom industry recorded an almost 9.5% sequential growth in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) in the fiscal third quarter FY20, helped by the first round of price hikes in three years taken last December that also did not adversely impact consumption, data collated by the sector regulator showed.

The telecom industry’s AGR climbed 9.48% on-quarter to Rs 40,877 crore in the quarter ended December, FY20. Overall sectoral minutes of consumption also rose, with the all-India average minutes of usage (MoU) per subscriber per month from wireless services rising nearly 10.71% sequentially to 712 in the quarter ended December.

Bharti Airtel becomes second largest telecom provider in terms of subscribers

In the duration of less than two years, Vodafone Idea has lost 116.13 million subscribers, pushing down the company to the third position with a user count of 325 million. On the contrary, during the same period, Reliance Jio nourished its user count and Bharti Airtel successfully retained its market share. In a broad view, Vodafone Idea has drastically lost more subscribers in more than a year as compared to the overall wireless user base of state-run BSNL.

BSNL Discontinues Rs. 499 Bharat Fibre Broadband Plan

BSNL is leading the wired broadband segment and has more than 8.11 million subscribers in the country, whereas other players, such as Airtel, JioFiber, ACT Fibernet, and Hathaway & Datacom are far behind. This means that BSNL is leading this segment.
The company has several plans, and now it is removing some of the plans from the list to make it better. The internet service provider has removed one entry-level plan of Rs. 499 from its BharatFiber services. The plan was available in some of the circles, including North East, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.

ITI Signs MoU with Tech Mahindra, Sets Sight on BSNL 4G Tenders

ITI, a PSU engaged in the manufacturing of telecom and defense equipment has set its sight on the now delayed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) 4G tender. The development was revealed on Monday by R M Agarwal, CMD of ITI in a video interview to CNBC TV18. ITI on Friday announced the signing of an MoU with Tech Mahindra for the new generation wireless technology with Agarwal on Monday highlighting that the MoU is largely dedicated to the BSNL tender. Agarwal projects the revenues in the range of Rs 2000 crores to Rs 6000 crores from the upcoming 4G and 5G business activity in India.

BSNL Employees Stage Protest, Ladakh MP Pushes BSNL to Upgrade Towers to 4G

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Employees Union (EU) said that the “employees will be forced to resort to more serious forms of struggles” if the management does not act on its demands. The development is on the heels of the BSNL employees staging demonstrations across India on Friday urging the government to act on its demands ranging from salary payments to 4G roll out. The BSNLEU on Saturday said that the circle and district unions of BSNL held the demonstrations “in a very successful” manner despite the COVID-19 restrictions in most parts of India. The BSNLEU had earlier said that the employees participating in the demonstrations should take necessary precautions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The employees were asked to follow social distancing and masks were said to be mandatory for those taking part in the demonstrations. Further, the BSNLEU said that only 10 employees in “big cities” should take part in the programme while five employees were permitted in other cities.

BSNL’s 4G plans taking a delayed path

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)’s tender for upgrading telecom equipment to 4G, is set to be further delayed.
The Central government has constituted a committee last week to “refine technical specifications” and make them more favourable to Indian companies. This move is seen by the BSNL Employees’ Union, which organised a nationwide protest on Friday demanding allocation of 4G to BSNL, as another delaying tactic to favour private players.
