BSNL to close CDMA services from Sept 5

Nashik: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd’s (BSNL), Nashik division will close down its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile network and landline services from September 5.
Consumers using the CDMA mobile network will be given the option to switch over to GSM (Global System Mobile) network while retaining the same contact number.

BSNL officials said the move was being made as the CDMA model has become outdated.

Currently, BSNL has a total of 5.77 lakh customers across all verticals — landline, mobile and broadband — in the district. Of this, around 4.50 lakh customers avail pre-paid and post-paid system. Moreover, BSNL has 92,000 landline and 35,000 broadband customers.

Presently, there are only 2,150 CDMA connections while all other connections are GSM based.

While it is easier to swap phones by shifting the SIM cards if one has GSM connection, it is not that easy in CDMA connection.

BSNL officials said that the decision to do away with CDMA services has been taken following instructions from the head office.

‘Open house’ to address grievances: BSNL has organised an ‘open house’ in the city on August 16 to address the grievances of their customers. Various issues pertaining to bills, network and other grievances are to be settled. BSNL’s Nashik office has appealed to their customers to remain present at the open house and convey their grievances.

BSNL officials said that apart from providing 3G services in the city and some parts of the district, it has also started upgrading the existing 2G towers into 3G in rural parts of the district to provide better network to its customers.
