BSNL to launch 4G services in Karnataka soon

With competition in the telecom sector getting more intense and private players doling out attractive schemes to lure customers, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) is hoping to introduce 4G services in Karnataka this year. The tender for the same has been processed and the BSNL is awaiting spectrum allocation from the Government of India any time now.

As many as 130 cities and towns in Karnataka are likely to get 4G services, with the BSNL proposing to install 30,000 4G towers in the country and 10,000 4G towers in Karnataka alone.
R. Mani, Chief General Manager, Karnataka circle, BSNL, told a press conference here on Friday that the government’s clearance to the BSNL’s 4G proposal was all that is needed to launch the services.
Though he refused to cite reasons for the “delay” in getting the spectrum when private telecom players have already introduced 4G services, Mr. Mani said the process has begun with the commissioning of one 4G Base Transreciever Station (BTS) in Shivamogga in March this year. “Soon, 4G services will be available across Karnataka,” he replied. Mr. Mani said Karnataka telecom is the second BSNL circle in the country to earn revenue of ₹2,000 crore in 2017-18, with a net profit of ₹35 crore. When other leading private telecom players suffered 40% revenue loss from stiff competition, the BSNL Karnataka circle registered profit despite 14% loss in revenue.
Mr. Mani said 42,358 high-speed broadband connections on Fibre to the Home (FTTH) technology are working in the State which is the highest in any BSNL circle in the country. He added that mobile services were expanding by upgrading technology and increasing the number of BTSs for improving network quality in the State.
The Karnataka circle is adding 1,280 3G towers at a cost of ₹228 crore. Mysuru telecom district is the first to complete replacement of 70 old technology BTSs with new technology 3G BTSs. The previous technology BTSs were supporting only up to 14 Mbps internet speed but the new technology BTSs supports speed up to 21 Mbps.
“The mobile data speed in Mysuru has already increased and the customers are happy with the speed,” he said.
Mysuru Telecom District General Manager K.L. Jairam said optical fibre will be extended to the doorstep of customers so that any service, including high speed internet, will be provided to the customer on demand. The Mysuru TD is ready to extend FTTH connection to any customer who requires high speed internet.
