Here’s How Google Aims At Bridging Digital Divide India

In September last year, India-born Google CEO Sundar Pichai took to YouTube to extend support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious 'Digital India' campaign that aims at digitally connecting 1.2 billion people in the country. And now it seems that Google is prepping up to kickstart its 'Project Loon' in India.

A week ago, the government asked Google to pick a telecom operator as its partner for testing the balloon-based Internet technology, Loon Project, in the country. Now, an Economic Times report has revealed that the technology giant, which restructured itself as Alphabet last year, is carrying out discussions with domestic telecom operators to start its much-awaited balloon-powered project here.
Not revealing any details, Google India chief Rajan Anandan told ET, that Google "can't do a Loon pilot without partnering with a local telco. We are talking to a number of them because the actual provisioning of the service is done by a local telco."
He further added, "The government has been very supportive - we are working on a pilot and we are working our way through it."
However, sources who are aware of the development told the business daily that Google is currently in talks with local telcos such as BSNL as it looks to pilot the programme in India.
