rmer Union minister Dayanidhi Maran, who is being questioned for the last four days in the illegal telephone exchange case, is proving to be a hard nut to crack and has been repeatedly telling his interrogators that "he was eligible for the BSNL phone lines under service category" being a minister (at that time).
The Central Bureau of Investigation, on its part has been continuously telling that "he has been lying both to them and to the Supreme Court".
CBI is likely to inform the Supreme Court during its next hearing that Maran has been "misleading" the agency continuously and will seek permission to arrest him.
On his claim that as a minister, he is eligible for BSNL phone lines for free, CBI confronted him with orders of the department of telecom and rules which nowhere mention that any politician (MP, MLA or minister) can be given phone lines for free in such high numbers.
BSNL had installed a total of 770 phone lines at his residences in Chennai and Delhi, which he allegedly used from 2004 to 2007 for commercial purposes to do with his family-owned Sun TV. In lieu of the phones, he was supposed to pay Rs 1.78 crore to the BSNL but he never made any payment and misused the lines for personal gains.
"During his questioning from 11 am till 5 pm since Monday, Maran has been only speaking lies. We are telling him that we have very strong documentary evidence against him," said a source.
"Wherever he can defend himself, he is but when he runs out of any clarification on the evidence we show him, he has no words," said the officer.
