By May 15, the ten Wi-Fi zones in major public centres
of the city would be operational, said sources in the BSNL, which is
implementing the project in collaboration with the Corporation of Kochi
and QuadGen Wireless Solutions.
In the first phase of
the project, Wi-Fi facility is being made available at the Corporation
office, Subhash Park, Marine Drive, High Court, Kaloor bus stand,
Edappally, Durbar Hall Ground, High Court, the Court Complex,
Mattancherry and Fort Kochi.
“The facility is up and
running as of Saturday on a trial basis. The hotspots have been set up
and access points activated, within a radius of up to 300 metres in each
of these locations. Traffic data is being collected from the public
logging in for free for 15 minutes. We are just monitoring the volume of
traffic and data flow to see if there’s a need to up the bandwidth for
enhancing data speed in certain areas. However, bandwidth and validation
of the tariff structure will only be finalised after evaluating the
data traffic,” said an official.
The State-run BSNL
had earlier maintained that the Wi-Fi zones would be at a radius of 300
metres from the access point and a bandwidth of 10 mbps would be made
available to users.
Once commissioned, mobile users
with a valid connection can log in using a login id and password and
payment could be made either through net banking or using prepaid
vouchers, to be made available to BSNL franchisees in the city.
Besides,
the BSNL is working on a proposal to have a total of 500 Wi-Fi hotpots
across the State. “BSNL Ernakulam alone will have 120 sites as part of
this ambitious project,” said the official.
