State-run BSNL is contemplating legal action against telecom service providers like Loop Telecom, S-Tel, Etisalat among others that have closed their operations but have not paid their dues concerning interconnection usage charges (IUC).
Besides telcos who have shut their shops in India, leading firms namely Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications and yet-to-start Reliance Jio Infocomm in all 49 telecom companies owe Rs 1,142.73 crore to BSNL.
Telecom firms are required to pay interconnection charges when its subscriber make call to other network. The charge gets added up in final price that a subscriber has to pay.
A top BSNL official told FE that of the gross outstanding of Rs 1,142.73 crore that telecom companies owe to it, a sizeable amount of Rs 1,002.9 crore is under dispute largely related to Call Details Record (CDR) issue, non-payment of SMS invoices and interest amount invoices on late payments.
Companies like Loop Telecom, Etisalat and S-Tel that have closed down their operations post-SC orders in 2012, owe Rs 17.87 crore, Rs 3.08 crore and Rs 1.33 crore, respectively.
