BSNL has started rolling out Public Wi-Fi Hot spots in major cities, shopping malls, colleges etc across India. Telecom Minister Sri. Ravi Shankar Prasad inaugurated BSNL's Free Wi-Fi project in Varanasi Ghats.

To have a better mobile broadband experience to customers, BSNL plans to deploy Wi-Fi Off load solution on PAN India basis.  Wi-Fi Off load solution aims for Off-loading Mobile data traffic from 2G/3G Mobile services whenever mobile users enter into Wi-Fi hot spot zone.

How it works?

When a mobile customers with active data connection enters into Wi-Fi hot spot zone, the mobile data traffic from 3G/2G network will switch to Wi-Fi network.

BSNL addition of 14,421 2G sites and 10,605 3G sites across the country

State run tlecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is investing over Rs.11,000 crore to improve its network and focus on customer care and service delivery for better service quality and installing mobile towers in Naxal-dominated areas.

"BSNL and MTNL are taking several steps to enhance revenues through investments to strengthen its network and focus on consumer care and service delivery to improve quality of service," Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 25-02-2015.

Both companies have drastically lost their subscriber base mainly due to inadequate investment that led to network coverage issues, inability to compete with private sector telecom firms with regard to marketing and customer satisfaction, he said.

TRAI reduced the ceiling price for the call carriage

When you make a STD call to a number outside your telecom circle, your network operator is required to transfer your call to an operator which has National long distance (NLD) telephony license, who in turn transfers your call to the recipient network in another circle. The NLD operator charges a carriage fee to the network on which the call originates for carrying it over the long distance. This leads to STD calls being costlier than local calls.

In each town, we will provide WiFi hotspots to universities, public spaces like bus stations and railway stations. High-speed connectivity will be one of the primary growth drives in development of the State

Pan India number portability from 3rd May 2015

Telecom regulatory authority of India has yesterday issued the 6th amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation which was in place since 2009. The DOT had notified all telecom operators on 3rd November 2014 to prepare their systems for the implementation of full Pan India number portability to be in place in six months from the date of issue of the notification which comes to 3rd May 2015. This date has been made official by TRAI in the latest amendment.

TRAI had also floated a consultation paper to the operators regarding the handling of issues pertaining to disconnection of postpaid numbers in case of the bill not being settled with the donor network before porting to the recipient network and regarding the lock-in period with the new operator before porting the number again. With the inputs received from the operators, TRAI has issued new guidelines with regards to these issues as well in the 6th amendment.

BSNL to roll out 5G, WiFi services

BSNL will soon roll out high bandwidth WiFi services in select cities in the State by April, Chief General Manager, BSNL AP Circle, V. Srinivasan said here on Tuesday.

BSNL has tied up with US-based Quadgen, which is working with US telecom major service provider AT & T, for the purpose. It is also gearing up to launch 5G services in the State.

Telecom regulator reduces carriage charge by 30 paise

New Delhi, February 24:  

A day after reducing the termination charges, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reduced carriage charges to 35 paise from 65 paise earlier. This will make STD calls cheaper.

“The ceiling of 65 paise for carriage charge was fixed in 2006. Thereafter, many developments have taken place. New telecom service providers (TSPs) have entered the national long distance... Therefore, the Authority is of the view that there is a strong case to review the carriage charge,” TRAI said.

Eight private telecom operators participate in the upcoming spectrum auction starting March 4

Eight private telecom operators including Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, RCom, Reliance Jio, Tata Docomo, Aircel and Uninor on Monday submitted applications to participate in the upcoming spectrum auction starting March 4. However Sistema Shyam TeleServices (MTS India), BSNL, MTNL and Videocon Telecom are some of mobile service providers, which are not participating in the spectrum auction.
DoT has fixed the pan-India per megahertz reserve price for the 800MHz CDMA band at Rs 3,646 crore; for the 900 MHz band Rs 3,980 crore (excluding Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and J&K); for the 1,800MHz band Rs 2,191 crore (excluding Maharashtra and West Bengal) and for 2,100 MHz Rs 3,705 crore.

BSNL rationalizes validity period of Prepaid Data Packs from 23 Feb 2015

State run telecom PSU BSNL has rationalized its tariffs of Prepaid Data Tariffs. Mostly it has slashed validity period by 1 to 2 days without changing any data benefits. Data STV 39 has reduced validity of 6 days while validity period of 14 days of Data STV 78 is revised to 12 days. Similarly validity period of STV 98 is trimmed from 19 days to 17 days, STV 139 to 19 days , STV 155 to 26 days and STV 176 to 28 days.  But for STV 561,821, 1011 and 1949 validity period have been increased as a promotional offer for a period of 90 days . STV 561 will have a new validity of 60 days while STV 821,1011 and 1949 will come with 90 days validity period. These tariff changes will come into force from 23rd Feb 2015.

Government of India has decided to make it mandatory to link mobile SIM connections with Aadhaar number to weed out ghost users and curb the misuse of mobile phones for any terrorist act, extortion or other offences.

Major telecom operators - BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance and Idea, have also agreed to test Aadhaar number based e-KYC for issuing SIM cards in five circles as a pilot project. This pilot will be conducted in Bhopal, Kolkata, Delhi, Lucknow and Bengaluru by telecom operators.

Under the proposal, a person would be able to avail a new SIM card (Mobile Connection) instantaneously by entering his/her Aadhaar number and biometrics, without needing to present a physical documentary proof. Union Government to Planning to declare BSNL as sick industry.

Eight Unions of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited have threatened to launch a nationwide indefinite stir from March 17 to protest against the move by the Union government to consider the public sector unit as sick industry, according to BSNL employees union president M Kanniappan.

Kanniappan told reporters that the decision was taken during the forum of BSNL Employees Union. He also said that BSNL employees would be submitting a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25 signed by one crore people while urging him not to grant the sick PSU status to BSNL.
The union have alleged the lack of financial support by the government to BSNL.

NEW DELHI: Jayanta Kumar was a harried customer of BSNL. A resident of Ghaziabad in the National Capital Region, he had been running from pillar to post just to get a bill for his landline and broadband connection, which was not delivered for six months. "
Finally, I had to use my contacts to prompt them in generating a bill. Is this how you do business?" says Kumar, who discontinued his BSNL connection and hopped on to a private operator.

Dear friends when I analyzed the reason behind the present situation of BSNL I found many reasons and few of those are as follows.

1.I feel the most harmful reason was the silence of our so called unions and associations leaders when mobile license was distributed to private operators except BSNL(DOT).During those times unions were much more powerful than of now.They could have called for strike for getting license for BSNL(DOT) but unfortunately they didn't do anything rather prefferred to be remain silent.They could have fought upto any extent to provide license to BSNL(DOT) along with private operators so there could be a healthy compettion in the market.There were some kind of nexus between the then Telecom Ministers,beurocrates and private firms.I some times feel our union leaders might be a part of those nexus to be remain silent.

State run telecom operators BSNL and MTNL plans to stop their BlackBerry Services as they are incurring losses. The subscriber base is very less (around 15,000) for Blackberry services and BSNL loses around Rs 15 crore every year on this service.

Considering the loses, the state run telcos are now reviewing their need to spend on the software to provide interception services to intelligence agencies. Since the subscriber base is very less, the stoppage is not going to create  major financial losses to BSNL or MTNL.

Over 15,000 BSNL users in Lucknow have fake records

Lucknow, Over 15,000 subscribers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) were found to have provided fake addresses and contact details to the state-owned service provider, an official said Monday.
“This is a huge number of subscribers in a city and after their CIF details were found missing on our server, necessary action was initiated,” V.K. Shukla, chief general manager for BSNL (east), told IANS.

Aircel, BSNL, Vodafone Leading Poor Quality of Mobile Services, Says TRAI Report

Aircel subscribers are facing poor quality service in Jammu and Kashmir, states a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report.
TRAI on Friday said Aircel, BSNL and Vodafone are leading poor quality of mobile services based on congestion at the Point of Interconnection (POI) between various mobile service providers in India.
To mention, the poor service by cellular operators in Kashmir has become irritant for the local populace. The service of cellular companies here has gone from bad to worse post floods with call drops, poor network signal becoming regular feature.

BSNL to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in 9 states

QuadGen Wireless has partnered with BSNL to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in 9 states focused on Southern and Western India.
The states where QuadGen Wireless can put up hotspots in Southern and Western India include – Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. In these states, consumers and enterprise users will get Internet speeds between 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

BSNL 60Mbps Unlimited Internet Fiber Broadband Plans : OFFER

BSNL, India's Largest Broadband Subscriber base Telecom Operator has announced the extension of promotional offer, with huge customer response for new high speed BSNL Fiber Broadband Plans which allows Unlimited Internet at 20Mbps to 60Mbps download speed, introduced recently from 10.11.2014 to 07.02.2015 for Bangalore Internet Customers.

BSNL to start E-auction of vanity Landline numbers

BSNL is already conducting E-auction for vanity mobile numbers and now plans to introduce the same for vanity Landline number through its website.

To participate in the auction customers must access BSNL E-auction website and register by paying the registration fee. Once logged in customer must give his complete address and nearest landline number to identify the exchange code. Customers will get the list of available vanity number under his exchange and select a number to place his bid. through SMS, customer will be informed if other bidders have placed higher amount for the same number. At the end of the auction winners will be notified by Email/SMS and customer need to visit nearest customer service center with required documents to get the new connection.
