Indian state-run operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has won the Digital India project in Bihar and 16 other states. The digital divide has to be removed by laying optical fibre in every village (panchayats) to provide broadband connectivity to rural India, The Economic Times reports, citing S L Singh, chief general manager, BSNL, Bihar Circle. The first stage of the project covers 315 blocks and 5,202 gram panchayats, while the second stage includes 219 blocks and 3,152 panchayats.
"As of now, optical fibre has been laid in more than 1,500 panchayats. By March 2016, we will complete the first phase", Singh added. Customers will have access to internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps in all panchayats.
"The government of India intends to provide broadband connectivity through optical fibre to all the 250,000 villages in the country for the implementation of various services like e-health, e-education and e-governance. Our aim is to connect rural areas with high-speed internet network through National Optical Fibre Network", Singh said.
