BSNL landline users in Ernakulam and Idukki districts will get to enjoy next generation services like video calls, high-speed browsing and videoconferencing under CUG (closed user group) within a year if the company’s plan to convert 13 of its high-volume telephone exchanges under Ernakulam SSA (secondary switching area), covering Ernakulam, Idukki and the Lakshadweep islands, into next generation network exchanges comes to fruition.
The project has been pilot-tested at Kumbalangi, Palluruthy and Edakochi exchanges.
“Testing is under way at Vyttila as well. We have identified 13 exchanges with over 55,000 lines each under the SSA where the digital switches are being replaced with IP [internet protocol]-based switches, which will enable us to provide internet and telephone connectivity from the same equipment.
Besides offering video call facility, transfer of calls between landline and mobile and high-speed internet services, companies can plug into the scheme using the CUG plan. This will help them do videoconferencing involving offices across the country with a large number of users dialled in.
The attraction is that a single bill will cover everything,” G. Muraleedharan, principal general manager, told the media here on Wednesday.
He said public response to the recently-launched WiFi service at 10 spots in the city has been encouraging. At least 300 people use the service daily and given the fact that it has just taken off, the numbers are sure to go up, he said.
