Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to start Voice Telephony over WiFi (VoWiFi) service with the help of ‘carpet WiFi’ networks.
In
the first phase, carpet or unbroken WiFi network will be provided to
selected locations. This will be on revenue-sharing basis where in
private companies will bring along hardware capabilities.
The State-owned telecom company is targetting tier-II and III cities and highways to deploy networks.
In
October last year, the government had notified to delicense 605 MHz of
spectrum in 5 GHz band that allowed companies to offer Wi-Fi based telecom services without paying for it.
BSNL is also looking forward to use incremental optic fibre for WiFi roll out.
The Government has already announced 10 million WiFi hotspots by 2022
in the country to facilitate public data offices. According to this
plan, minimum five hotspots in each of the 250,000-gram panchayats or
village blocks for public utility services are required.
