Expect call drop relief in defence areas soon

Finally, expect some relief from those frustrating mobile call drops and data slowdowns while passing through Defence-controlled areas in Bengaluru.
State-owned telecom operator BSNL has been given the go-ahead to install rooftop radiating antennas for its Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) at four such locations in the City, where call drops have been particularly severe.
At a recent meeting, Defence officials are learnt to have agreed to let BSNL put up the devices in RT Nagar, Halasuru, Domlur and Cantonment, where key roads are in close proximity to defence areas.

Concerns

Sources told Deccan Herald that the Defence Ministry was initially reluctant to allow towers in their areas and had insisted on having in-building solutions. But the acute call drop issues faced by the Ministry personnel themselves was factored in.

The radiating antennae, combined with BTS, are expected to boost mobile signals in an area by up to two kilometers around the installation. For mobile subscribers passing through the defence areas, this could be of enormous help since call drop and data slowdowns have been extremely high here.

This is a big issue, for instance, on Old Airport road from Domlur to Victoria road junction.  To boost its network within Bengaluru and facilitate seamless 3G data delivery, BSNL is in the process of putting up 600 BTS towers across the City over the next three months.
In the first instalment, the telecom provider had proposed 374 BTS locations, of which the Centre has approved 120.

To find more locations

Signal testing drives are now underway across the City to identify more locations with acute call drop issues.

Service providers find it tough to keep mobile conversations seamless in defence areas, since towers are few and far between. Leading operator Airtel has tried putting up repeaters where towers are not allowed. Such devices boost signals by 300 to 400 meters but are limited vertically to six floors.

The option of installing atom cells dedicated to individual buildings has been ruled out in defence locations.
