As a large number of subscribers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) in the city and district continue to face various problems due to poor quality of service and maintenance of its installations and shifting to other private service providers, the BSNL authorities are struggling hard to cope up with the challenges to bring about notable changes in its services and retain its customers.
Admitting that subscribers were facing problems due to less than the promised internet speeds under various plans, General Manager of Belagavi Telecom District Deepak Tayal told a section of media here on Wednesday that measures were underway to improve the quality of signal and services through capacity building and system upgradation.
The subscribers would soon start seeing qualitative improvement in services as more Base Tranceiver Station (BTS) towers were in the process of installation.
He said there were totally 342 towers in the district, including 41 in the city. So far 2G/3G connections were available through 48 of the 62 towers targeted during the current financial year. Of the ten taluk headquarters in the district, 3G connections had been made available in Athani, Bailhongal, Saudatti and Ramdurg, while the process of extending service to the remaining taluk headquarters is on.
A major project that BSNL has embarked upon was to provide broadband connectivity to all the 485 GPs in the district; 315 GPs were being covered by BSNL by providing broadband connectivity through high speed optical fibre cables, and the remaining were being covered by Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL). Hopefully, all the GPs would have broadband connections by the end of March 2016.
On the alleged poor maintenance of installations such as DP box (junction box) and failure to replace decades-old cables, he said he would instruct the staff to take up immediate repairs and cover them properly before on the onset of the next monsoon. BSNL underground lines were often damaged due to excavations for construction and widening of roads, laying of overhead and underground electricity cables, and drinking water pipelines.
