BSNL is set to revolutionize the telecom industry with its latest innovation. BSNL is introducing a new technology called Direct to Device (D2D), which allows users to make calls and send messages without needing a SIM card or a traditional mobile network. This breakthrough comes as BSNL aims to compete with industry giants like Reliance Jio, especially in remote and low-connectivity regions.
What is BSNL D2D Technology?
The D2D technology leverages the power of satellite communication to enable phone calls and messaging without the need for a SIM card. BSNL has partnered with Viasat, a global satellite communications company, to bring this service to life.
In a recent demonstration, BSNL showcased how this technology can send two-way messages using a commercial Android smartphone connected to Viasat’s satellite located 36,000 kilometers away from Earth.
How D2D Technology Works
Similar to satellite messaging features available in high-end devices like iPhones and flagship Android phones, BSNL’s D2D technology integrates satellite and mobile networks. It is particularly designed to work in areas with low or no cellular connectivity. The technology enables users to make voice calls and send text messages via satellite, mostly useful during emergency situations, natural disasters, and remote locations.
This service is versatile, capable of functioning on land, in the air, and even at sea, thus expanding its reach to rural and underserved regions where traditional network coverage is sparse.
BSNL vs. Jio And Airtel
BSNL’s introduction of D2D technology comes at a time when the competition in the Indian telecom sector is high. Reliance Jio, led by Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal led Airtel has dominated the market with its affordable data plans and extensive 4G network. Jio recently launched Jio AirFiber, aiming to expand its services in rural and remote areas with high-speed internet and entertainment bundles.
BSNL’s move to introduce satellite-based communication could serve as a game-changer, especially in regions where even Jio’s extensive network struggles to provide coverage. By focusing on satellite technology, BSNL is targeting niche areas such as emergency communication and remote connectivity, which could set it apart from competitors.
As BSNL gears up to roll out this innovative technology, it remains to be seen how competitors like Jio will respond to this new frontier in the telecom landscape. However, one thing is clear: BSNL’s D2D technology is set to bridge the connectivity gap in India’s most underserved regions, offering a new way to stay connected without relying on conventional mobile networks.
