State run telecom operator has kept one thing quite consistent – its
loss making ability. The company has been posting losses for last nine
years in a row and seems to be happy about it. In fact it improves upon
its losses year on year.
For the financial year ended March 2018, the company posted a loss of Rs 7992 crore, telecom minister Manoj Sinha informed Lok Sabha in a written reply. A year back, BSNL had posted losses of Rs 4793 crore.
It is estimated that the company’s loss would cross Rs 9000 crore in the current fiscal ending March 2019. The last time the state run telco had tasted profit was a decade back – in 2008-09. In that year the total profit of BSNL was recorded at Rs 575 crore. Since then, because of various reasons, the company has consistently been unable to put its house in order.
Profit/Loss Of BSNL In Last 10 Years
Year Profit/Loss (Cr)
2008-09 Rs 575
2009-10 Rs 1823
2010-11 Rs 6384
2011-12 Rs 8850
2012-13 Rs 7884
2013-14 Rs 7019
2014-15 Rs 8234
2015-16 Rs 4859
2016-17 Rs 4793
2017-18 Rs 7992
BSNL, that operates in 20 circles out of total 22, has also lost market share in the last fiscal. According to the data shared by the minister it’s market share came down to 10% from 19% in 2009.
Though the minister did not spell out the reasons for the condition at BSNL, he certainly has suggested measure that are being taken up by the state run telco to improve the condition.
He said Phase 4 mobile expansion project is under rollout which envisages introducing 4G services in BSNL. The operator is yet to launch its 4G services in the country. This will also increase GSM Radio capacity, mobile coverage and provide faster data connectivity.
To improve quality of wireline telephone network BSNL will replace Legacy PublicSwitched Telephone Network (PSTN) switches to Next Generation Network (NGN) which support different kind of services i.e. voice, video and data. With migration to NGN, customer will get enhanced Value Added Services on wire line like Personalized Ring Back Tone, Multi Media Video Conferencing, IP Centrex, Limited Fixed Mobile Telephony (LFMT) and Fixed Mobile convergence(FMC), etc. This will provide better facilities to customers and at lower maintenance cost to BSNL.
The sad part is, measures like this are always discussed and, at times, being implemented at the firm but the situation of the state run firm remained the same over the years. In fact its deteriorating over the years.
