Chennai: Thousands of Reliance communication
(RComm) customers are facing trouble in getting into other cellphone
service providers, especially to BSNL, as the public sector unit and
customers are equally unaware of the technicality of the portability
procedure.
According to a highly placed source in BSNL, there are nearly 8,500 RComm customers approaching BSNL centres to port their numbers. And of which 1,400 customers are based in Chennai. But the customers find issues in getting the unique portability code (UPC), a mandate to provide portability service. “RComm has to provide services up to November 30 to enable the smooth portability service to its customers. But 90 per cent of its towers are shut down due to unknown reasons. If a customer decides to request for UPC message, he should have network coverage. Due to tower shutdown, many customers trying to embrace BSNL are left helpless” alleged the source.
It is also learnt that the other private operators are enabling smooth portability. “The officers in RComm are also stubborn to help us and at times they do not reply to our queries. We have given complaints to the department of telecommunication regarding the unethical business model of private operators. We are awaiting action,” the insider said.
Customers using the service of the Anil Ambani owned company are affected as the youngest of Ambani brothers announced the closing of services from December 1. “The RComm SIM card was used by my wife for several years.
When we tried to move to BSNL, we could not get UPC. Now the coverage is also lost. This makes difficult to make online bank transactions as OTP could not be received” rued E. Venkatachalam, a resident of Anna Nagar.
Deccan Chronicle also tried to contact a few RComm customers, but the numbers are unreachable. “There is no specific complaint received from BSNL on this issue. We have a tie-up with Aircel and Vodafone. Our customer can lock on any one of these signals by using ‘network selection’ option. By using their signal, the customer can get UPC message and port to another network provider they wish” a nodal officer of RComm said.
