BSNL Eyes On Providing Free Wi-Fi Services To 121 Airports In India

BSNL is working on a project to provide free WiFi services at more airports managed by Airports Authority of India. At present, Airports Authority of India (AAI) manages 121 airports in the country including 11 international airports. Airports Authority of India has also partnership with Tata Teleservices for WiFi services at some airports.

As a matter of fact, all Members of Parliament have been advised by PM Narendra Modi to adopt a village in their constituency under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) to make it a model village by 2016. So, these Members of Parliament have sent a request to BSNL to establish Wi-Fi hotspots in their respective villages.
At the same time, Facebook has also taken an initiative to assist state-run BSNL for setting up 100 Wi-Fi hotspot locations in rural areas of western and southern parts of the country. Besides, about $1 million per year will also be spent by Facebook for sponsoring these 100 Wi-Fi hotspots in the country. Facebook will buy bandwidth from BSNL as well.
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava, explains, “We approached AAI Chairman three months back for providing WiFi services. He actively responded to it. AAI has agreed to allow BSNL services and circulated information to all airports managed by them for allowing BSNL services”. He further says, “We have started offering WiFi services at 4-5 airports including Bhopal, Coimbatore. Depending on commercial feasibility we will expand services at airports”.
