BSNL’s unlimited free call offer not without a rider

If you think that the much-hyped offer of unlimited free calls between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. from the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to landline customers is actually free, think again.

The State-owned telecom operator has brought in a fresh rider to the offer introduced to both existing and new customers from May 1. In April, subscribers began receiving an SMS alert: “Dear Customer, make unlimited free night call from BSNL landline to any network from May 1.

But on Tuesday, subscribers received another SMS: “Dear customer, Use BSNL landline for unlimited free calling from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. to service provider networks in India. This facility is available to customers under specific plans only. For details, call 18003451500.”

It is learnt that broad band users of different tariff plans will be deprived of the unlimited free calls offer. Initially it was decided that the proviso would be applicable only to government employees. But now all BSNL landline users come under it.

“The broadband schemes are of two types — separate monthly rental and combo offers. The decision has come from the corporate office seeking broadband users to switch over to profitable plans,” official sources said.
