New Delhi: BSNL, the public sector telecom company, is preparing for a major transformation with the introduction of its innovative 'Direct to Device' service, which enables seamless communication between devices without the need for SIM cards.
Along with launching a new logo and slogan, BSNL is rolling out 4G services nationwide and is gearing up to compete with private telecom companies. Reports suggest that 5G services will follow shortly after the 4G rollout. The 'Direct to Device' technology integrates satellite and terrestrial mobile networks to provide uninterrupted connectivity. BSNL has developed this service in collaboration with Viasat, showcasing it at the Indian Mobile Congress. This technology allows users to send messages even in remote areas, such as mountains, seas or during emergencies, similar to satellite messaging on iPhones and Android devices.
Using commercial Android smartphones with non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity, BSNL has successfully tested the system. This technology connects cellular networks with satellites, enabling satellites to function as mobile towers in space.
BSNL is not alone in exploring satellite connectivity; private telecom companies like Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea are also entering this space. However, the real challenge comes from Elon Musk's Starlink, which has already deployed thousands of satellites and is providing satellite connectivity worldwide.
Meanwhile, Starlink still awaits approval in India, with opposition from industry leaders like Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Jio and Sunil Bharti Mittal of Airtel, who advocate for spectrum allocation through auctions.
