BSNL to invest Rs 77 billion in capex in 2015-16

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has set aside Rs 77
billion for investing in capex during 2015-16. The amount will be spent on deploying next
generation networks, expansion of mobile services in Phase-7, and expanding Wi-Fi services,
among others. The operator spent Rs 33 billion in capex during 2014-15. This is in line with the
operator’s goal of reviving its operations.

BSNL has already witnessed a doubling in subscriber addition since July 2015. Also, mobile
network portability (MNP) has become positive for BSNL implying that there has been net gain
in terms of subscribers through MNP. The operator has seen a 42 per cent rise in revenues
from the tower business during 2014-15 and is now planning to set up a subsidiary to monetise
its tower assets. Going forward, it plans to focus on data to drive growth and enhancing mobile
network data capacity to improve coverage and quality of service.
