Prioritise handing over land for road development: Union Minister

Mayor Rajan Pallan and team on Monday met Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad in Delhi to talk about handing over of land that belonged to the postal department to the Thrissur Corporation for the development of Pattalam Road.

The Union minister promised the Mayor’s team to prioritise handing over the land to the civic body. The minister also promised to take steps to shift the current post office to the temporary building arranged by the city corporation within 15 days.

The minister gave direction to the concerned authority to prepare necessary documents for the land deal. He also gave direction to the authorities to prepare design for the new building for the post office to be constructed at the land allotted by the corporation.

However, the decision for handing over of land will need cabinet sanction.
It will take time of one month, according to Union Minister’s office.

Former MP P.C. Chacko had made arrangement for the Mayor’s team to meet the Union Minister. Apart from Mayor, the team included former Mayor I.P. Paul, councillors K. Gireesh Kumar, C.S. Sreenivasan, M.K. Varghese and corporation secretary K.M. Basheer.

The Mayor and team had met authorities in Delhi six months ago, in connection with acquiring land for Pattalam Road development.

The permission was received to acquire land of the BSNL within two months. The corporation acquired 4.5 cents of land after demolishing the compound wall of the BSNL office.

A team was formed with Kerala chief post master general as head for handing over the land of postal department. A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the postal department and the corporation.

As per the MoU, the corporation allotted 16.5 cents of land for construction new post office building.
The corporation will bear the expense of construction of the new building with area of 3,500 sq.ft. The corporation has arranged temporary facility to function the post office without rent till the new building is ready.
