PUNE:
The standing committee on Tuesday approved a proposal to give 50%
concession in road-digging charges to government agencies like the BSNL
and power utilities.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) , Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited, BSNL and the Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited had approached the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) seeking relief. "The PMC must consider giving concessions to these government agencies, otherwise they would pass on the additional charges to their consumers," stated the proposal forwarded by the municipal commissioner to the standing committee.
In most cases, roads are dug by telecom operators, electricity utility, cellphone operators, internet service providers and piped gas companies to lay cables or pipes. As many as 26 firms and operators carry out such work and pay the civic body for reworking the roads.
The corporators had earlier directed the civic administration to conduct a third-party inquiry into all road-digging works taken up in the city. The MSEDCL was the first to demand a 50% concession in charges. The corporators had rejected the proposal and argued that the civic administration is already suffering revenue losses. However, the civic administration once again tabled the proposal, which finally got a green signal.
