Printed telecom bills for another three months: BSNL

PANAJI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) authorities have decided to defer implementing the decision to discontinue providing printed bills to consumers, by three months.

BSNL, principal general manager, Yogesh Chandra Mishra said the decision has been taken in view of suggestions and objections made by NGOs and consumers. BSNL had last week decided to issue soft copies of the bill from January 1, 2019. Consumers will now receive hard copy bills for at least three more months.

Demanding that the decision be kept on hold, GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins had said that over one lakh landline phone consumers would be affected and that customer service centres (CSCs) across Goa would witness chaos “as the decision has been taken in haste and without properly informing the consumers.”

Goacan had asked Mishra to defer the plan till March 31, 2019 and till then, to create awareness about the same, especially among senior citizens. Letters had also been sent to the BSNL chairman and managing director, among others.

Mishra told TOI that till the switch-over, they will create awareness among consumers and that their email IDs and mobile numbers will be obtained. Once the date is finalised for implementation, the bills will be mailed to consumers with an intimation on their mobile numbers. Mishra further said that as per the suggestions received, detailed instructions will be printed on the bills to be issued over the next three months – January 3, February 2 and March 3, 2019, so that consumers are well aware of the plan.

“We agree with the suggestions. I am hopeful that once adequate awareness is created, the transition from hard copy to soft copy bills will be smooth,” he said.

The final decision on whether the implementation will start from April 1, 2019 or after that will be taken by the higher authorities, sources said.

Goacan had also said that the decision should be taken only after proper discussion with the district collectors, the state government’s general administration department and the telecom advisory committee.
