Do you think your very own and much
loved telecom operator BSNL is making only losses all this while? No,
you are quite wrong. BSNL makes profit too! Out of the all 20 circles it
operates, the state-run telecom operator is profitable in just two –
Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala!
According to data shared by the telecom
ministry, in 2018, BSNL reported losses in all circles but these two. In
Kerala, the PSU operator made a profit of Rs 373 crore. For that circle
the company’s total revenue was Rs 2642 crore and the expenses were Rs
2268 crore.
Similarly, for Andaman and Nicobar
Islands, the company made a profit of Rs 158 Crore. The revenue and
expense of BSNL in this circles were Rs 219 and Rs 62 crore
respectively.
The maximum loss was reported in Andhra
Pradesh circle where BSNL reported a total revenue of Rs 2143 crore with
expenses touching Rs 2939 crore giving a loss of Rs 796 crore.
Overall, for the year 2018, BSNL
reported a total loss of Rs 4844 crore. The company’s revenue and
expense for the year are reported as Rs 11115 crore and Rs 15959 crore
respectively.
Compared to FY2018, BSNL was profitable
in eight circles in FY 2017 and five in FY 2016. In 2017, the profitable
circles were Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Chhattisgarh,
Chennai, J&K, Maharashtra, Punjab and Odisha. In 2016, the
profitable circles for the PSU operator were Andaman and Nicobar
Islands, J&K, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha.
For the financial year ended March 2018,
the company posted a loss of Rs 7992 crore, telecom minister Manoj
Sinha informed Lok Sabha in a written reply. A year back, the state run
telco had posted losses of Rs 4793 crore.
It is estimated that the company’s loss
would cross Rs 9000 crore in the current fiscal ending March 2019. The
last time the state run telco had tasted profit was a decade back – in
2008-09. In that year the total profit of BSNL was recorded at Rs 575
crore. Since then, because of various reasons, the company has
consistently been unable to put its house in order.
