BSNL Announces Special Offers For Students, Govt. Employees Who Are Registering For WINGS Service

It has just been a week since the state-owned telecom operator, BSNL, launched its internet telephony services to the public. The service will be a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service that will
provide voice calling facilities for users over the internet, is a first of its kind in India for private and individual consumers. Now the company has launched a promotional offer for students, public sector employees and existing BSNL customers who plan to avail the VOIP services that have been branded as BSNL WINGS.

BSNL WINGS: Promotional offer explained

The special limited time promotional offer for the WINGS services has been launched earlier today by the Public Sector giant and is offering three different promotional offers for three categories of users. Here are the offers explored:

BSNL WINGS: PSU and Government Officials

Public Sector Employees and Government Officials are being offered a close to 50% discount on the registration charges to avail the WINGS services. While normally the one-time registration charges stand at Rs. 1,099 plus GST (which effectively puts it at Rs. 1296) Public Sector Employees and Government can avail this service with a reduced one-time service fee of just Rs. 599 plus GST (which effectively works out to Rs. 706).

BSNL WINGS: Existing BSNL Customers

The company is also offering some benefits for the loyalty shown by its users as it is offering a special discount for its existing BSNL users (broadband and telecom service users). While the one-time registration charges remain at Rs. 1,099 plus GST (which is Rs. 1,296), these users get a respite of 2 months of free services. So existing BSNL users who avail the WINGS services will get two months of free service and only after this period will they prompted to pay the one-time service charges.

BSNL WINGS: Students

The promotional offer is also being extended to students as well. A student can avail a 20% rebate on the one-time service charge of Rs. 1,099 plus GST. This is a reasonable discount of Rs. 220. However, students would have to produce a valid Identity Card as a proof of them being a student.
As exciting as these offers may be, these are limited time only and are applicable from the 27th August to the 24th of November this year. This is a reasonable timeframe for availing this service. While the official launch of the WINGS services was from 4th of July, this was only a soft launch with BSNL accepting new connections only from the 1st of August. Even now the connectivity is limited in several regions and BSNL is only providing connectivity in phases.
Although the one-time registration charges that are being imposed is slightly high, there are no monthly charges or charges for calls. This is one of the best advantages of the VOIP service. VOIP based calls can be made using an app and by availing a broadband connection or Wi-Fi or 3G or 4G services of any operator. Users can also use the Internet Leased Lines to make calls. Users can register themselves using a 10 digit mobile number for activating the call services, but at the same time, no SIM card is required to use the protocol.

There are no handsets or instruments provided by the telecom operator and the only additional charges that a user can incur is an Rs. 2,000 deposit for ISD calls.
