Government to sell BSNL, MTNL assets in FY22 in a bid to revive ailing telcos: Report

NEW DELHI: In a bid to raise capital for state-run telecom Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), the government has identified several assets which it will sell in FY22, according to a top government official.

It should be noted that the asset monetisation of the two ailing telcos is part of a revival plan approved by the Central government in October 2019, which included a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to clamp down on employee-related costs and the merger of MTNL with BSNL, which has been shelved due to financial reasons.

“There was VRS, money allocated to buy 4G spectrum, and so on so forth. One of the considerations was they will raise money through monetization of BSNL and MTNL properties. There are several properties which have been identified and going forward, they will go for bidding," Tuhin Kanta Pandey, secretary, department of investment and public asset management (Dipam) told television news channel CNBC-TV18.
