Call drops increased significantly between April and June this year

TRAI has just announced that call drops saw a dramatic increase between the April-June quarter this year, where 2G networks appear to be the most affected. 3G networks saw a very minor increase in call drops, although it hasn't reached a concerning level at this point.
It is said that networks like Aircel, BSNL and Tata Teleservices weren't meeting TRAI's standards. TRAI mentioned that the worst affected cells call drops increased by 24.59% on 2G networks and 16.13% on 3G. This is up from 12.5% (2G) and 15.96% (3G) recorded during the January-March timeframe.

Despite taking all these factors into account, overall call drops remained at 1.64% in the quarter, while TRAI's standards mention that it should be under 2%, so there's no need for concern just yet.

TRAI had proposed imposing fines on network operators for call drops, which saw substantial criticism from telcos. However, a move like this might force operators into building a better network infrastructure so as to curb the issue.

Call drops are mostly noticed in highly dense areas and in regions where there are not enough mobile towers. So the solution is pretty simple although it's up to the operators to make sure the issue doesn't go out of hand.
