BSNL Starts Free WiFi At Konark Sun Temple From 21st May

Starting tomorrow, visitors to the 13th-century Sun Temple at Konark in Odisha, would get free WiFi service. State run operator BSNL is offering this service and all the required infrastructure are in place, highly placed sources in the company said.

“Installation of WiFi is complete since a week but I can’t say if its going live tomorrow,” BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava told TeleAnalysis.

As per our information, BSNL would offer wireless broadband at 10 mbps speed and first 30 minutes will be free. We, however, unable to ascertain what kind of revenue model will be applicable beyond the free 30 minutes period.

The Sun Temple at Konark is among the eight Archeological Survey of India (ASI) controlled monuments, identified by the Modi government, to get free WiFi service.  If Konark goes WiFi, as per the sources, it will be the second heritage site to offer the free internet service. The Ganga ghats of Varanasi were the first to get free wi-fi on the efforts by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who represents the this holy city in Lok Sabha.

ASI and local government had already provided all the required permissions necessary to install the WiFi infrastructure.

The other such monuments to get free internet are Khajuraho temple in Madhya Pradesh, Humpy in Karnataka, Shor temple in Mahabalipuram and Buddheshwar temple in Thanjore, Taj Mahal in Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Saranath in Varanasi.

The Konark Sun Temple is a 13- century architectural marvel and is a UNESCO World heritage site. The temple, built in the shape of a gigantic chariot, is built by Narashimha Dev of Ganga Dynasty around 1250 AD. The temple was built to worship the Sun God.
