The story of a guy who set up seven BSNL broadband connections
along with a WiFi router and started selling the connection for a
pittance of Rs.50 per month has caught the officials attention. The
Broadband services was allegedly sold for over 2000 customers in the
village by placing the routers at designated places. It is illegal for a
BSNL retail customer to resell the broadband services.
BSNL has also issued an advisory asking its customers not indulge in such things and additionally if they notice someone resorting to such things they can report to the authorities directly. This kind of arrangement will have a serious impact on BSNL’s revenue.
Broadband is still pretty expensive for the masses to subscribe and this entire ordeal makes us wonder why can’t BSNL take a similar initiative. We had recently also covered a piece of news which explained how BSNL has started renting out WiFi at the Varanasi ghat for a nominal charge, it would be interesting to see how this business model would fare in the villages.
