A BSNL telecom engineer was shot dead by unidentified assailants at his
residence at Nagagaon colony, Signal Basti area Dimapur on Sunday at
around 9 p.m.
Family members told this Reporter that the deceased identified as G.M. Rongmei was working as sub-divisional engineer (BSNL) posted at Zunheboto.
They said that two motor-cycle borne assailants with their face covered went to his residence. While one of them was waiting outside, the other went inside and called out the victim’s name and then shot him from point blank range.
The engineer was hit by the bullet on the face and died on the spot.
Late Rongmei’s niece, identified as Rajni, who had also accompanied the victim after he was called out, was also shot on the leg and sustained serious injury.
Both were rushed to the nearby Nikos Hospital where G.M. Rongmei was declared dead on arrival by the doctors. The victim’s niece was being treated for leg injury at the hospital, family sources said.
It was also informed that post-mortem would be conducted on the dead body after which it would be handed over to family members.
Meanwhile, the identities of the killers was yet to be ascertained while the motive for the crime was also not known till the time of filing this report.
Police were investigating the case, sources said.
