Jamshedpur: Employees of BSNL's Jamshedpur Secondary Switching
Area (SSA) will go on a two-day strike from December 12 in protest
against the Union government's proposal to hand over the maintenance of
mobile towers to private companies.
Various unions of the telecom major on Friday held a meeting at BSNL's Garamnala main telephone exchange in Sakchi to oppose the Centre's plans. They also demanded wage hike by the third pay revision committee.
President of the Jamshedpur unit of National Federation of Telecom Employees (NFTE), Prem Ranjan, said, "The government's move to handover BSNL towers is a bad move. It will be detrimental to BSNL and we are against this move. We will observe the strike during which 500 employees and other staff will abstain from work. If our demands are not met we will intensify our agitation in future."
Members of eight union functionaries, who were present at the meeting, demanded that the government drop the idea of handing over BSNL towers to private players.
The protesting union members said the Centre's steps could mar the future of BSNL. "If the government goes ahead with its plans, BSNL will cease to exist. BSNL always had a strong hold in rural areas and it needs to be compensated for its services," said Abhay Kumar, a functionary of All India BSNL Employees Association.
A delegation of the unions also met Sanjeev Verma, general manager of BSNL Jamshedpur SSA, and handed over a memorandum highlighting their demands.
The Jamshedpur SSA comprises three districts - East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan.
Sources said during the strike the employees would not attend to any complaints lodged by subscribers for both landline and mobile phone services.
