New ForcePhone technology to let you control smartphones with a squeeze

Imagine if you could control your smartphone with a simple squeeze. This is what the engineers from University of Michigan making a reality. The team is developing a Batsman-inspired software that can allow the users to command the smartphones using a sense of force/pressure on its body/display.
This ‘ForcePhone’ is a pressure-sensitive technology, similar to the 3D touch functionality that debuted on iPhone 6S. The researchers used ultrasonic waves to replicate the effects of 3D touch without the need for a special screen technology.

BSNL to introduce VDSL broadband plan for Rs 1045 offering speed upto 24 Mbps

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has introduced two new Super Speed Combo unlimited VDSL broadband plans for Hyderabad. The new broadband plans ‘BBG Super Speed Combo ULD 645 VDSL CS148′ and ‘BBG Super Speed Combo ULD 1045 VDSL CS149’ will be available on promotional basis for a period of 90 days with effect from June 1st, 2016.

Huawei successfully tests its new 5G air interface technology in China

In a series of field trials, Huawei found that its new 5G air interface technology can effectively improve spectrum efficiency and to meet diverse service requirements for 5G defined by ITU-R. The trials were conducted in April 2016 in Chendu, China and they were defined by the IMT-2020 5G Promotion Group.

Vodafone hikes voice STV rates to almost double in Kolkata

Vodafone has hiked the price of a special tariff voucher (STV) in Kolkata. In the circle, the telecom operator has withdrawn the bonus card of Rs. 75 and instead, introduced a new bonus card of Rs. 127. The new bonus card of Rs. 127 will allow the customers to make local calls at 40 p/minute and STD call at 35p/min for 56 days.

Rcom officially announces May 31st as the last day of CDMA services in phase 1 circles

Reliance communications the 4th largest operator by subscriber base which is in the process of launching its 4G LTE services in India has finally made an official announcement through its instacare app that it will be completely shutting down its CDMA services in the phase 1 circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, UP East, UP West and Madhya Pradesh, putting to rest the speculations that CDMA services might be continued in these circles side by side along with the 4G services.

Jio Infocomm, which is expected to launch full-fledged commercial operations by December this year, is preparing to raise up to Rs 750 crore through issuance of redeemable non-convertible debentures on a private placement basis, following last month’s debenture issue of up to Rs 2,250 crore.

MTNL, BSNL asset monetization plan may face hurdles: Ravi Shankar Prasad

The asset monetization plan for state-run telcos BSNL and MTNL has started already started to face hurdles due to predefined rules and regulations, even as the Telecom Ministry is trying hard to get the revenues up for these PSUs. According to a PTI report, the Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the precondition of using the land for telecom infrastructure at time of allotment may prove to be a hurdle. He said that some local support will be required to ensure that such plans go through smoothly.

BSNL to sign 2G roaming pact with Jio, Vodafone

State-owned BSNL is in advanced talks with Reliance Jio and Vodafone for signing a 2G roaming agreement this month. “We are in advanced stages for signing 2G intra-circle roaming agreement with Reliance Jio and Vodafone. I believe agreement with them should be signed this month,” BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava told PTI.

Telecom players request DoT to stop app based calling

NEW DELHI: Mobile operators' body COAI has requested DoT to take proactive steps to stop calls through apps, like the one recently planned by state-owed BSNL, saying they are against rules. In a letter to Telecom Secretary JS Deepak, it has said that connecting Internet calls with networks using numbers assigned for mobile or landline phones violated current interconnection rules and causes loss to terminating operator and exchequer.

BSNL beats private telcos in growth rate in February

NEW DELHI: BSNL today said it has registered the highest growth rate in providing new wireless connections during February this year, beating all private operators. BSNL has a growth rate of 1.67 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.18 per cent, Vodafone with 1.04 per cent and Idea Cellular with 0.85 per cent whereas the industry average stood at 0.85 per cent.

TRAI to float a consultation paper on Internet telephony in a month

Telecom regulator TRAI will come out with a consultation paper on Internet-based telephone service in a month. “We are bringing out consultation paper soon on Internet telephony. It is a matter of weeks…a month,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman R S Sharma told PTI when asked about the regulator’s views on calls made through mobile applications.

Telephone user base grows to 105.88 cr in March

The total telephone subscriber base in the country rose marginally in March to 105.88 crore on the back of growth in wireless as well as wire line users.

The overall user base stood at 105.18 crore at the end of February, sectoral regulator Trai said today.

The wireless subscriber base increased by 0.68 per cent to 103.36 crore at the end of March, from 102.66 crore last month.

Digital vans all set to take e-governance to rural areas

The government will roll out a new campaign on Monday under which 66 digital vans, equipped with Internet and audio-visual facilities, will go to 657 districts by March 2017 to increase awareness about various e-governance services in rural and semi-urban areas.
“The aim is to reach out to more than 10 lakh citizens and register over 1.5 lakh rural citizens for MyGov, digital locker, Aadhaar and other digital services,” a Telecom Ministry official said.
These vans would cover more than 13 lakh km in 13,200 man days.

Following the success of the spectrum auction of 2015, which raked in the highest-ever returns of 1.10 lakh crore last year, the Centre is now gearing up for the next round of public sale of airwaves. Though the date for the auctions is yet to be finalised, Union Minister for Communications & IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said it would happen “shortly”, in the next two-three months.

Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said in Mumbai that BSNL has earned a profit of 1,72,000 crore rupees. He also said that MTNL has also made a profit of 25 crore rupees .
The union minister, who is in Mumbai to celebrate the successful completion of two years of the BJP government, was speaking at a press conference.
