DoT sanctions Rs 5,278 crore for ex-gratia payment to BSNL VRS optee employees

NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sanctioned Rs 5,278.65 crore towards the payment of ex-gratia to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) employees who have opted for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS).

"Sanction of the competent authority is hereby conveyed for the payment of an amount of Rs 5,278.65 crore to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for ex-gratia payment to BSNL VRS optee employees," the department in a circular Friday said.

The development has come following a legal notice served by BSNL's former employees to the secretaries of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Department of Expenditure (DoE) citing a failure to pay ex-gratia in two equal installments of 50% each, by March 31, and another by June 30.

The department's directive further said that the BSNL should consume funds by making payments for ex-gratia on or before 31st July 2020, and it shall ensure that this amount is spent only on the payment of ex-gratia.

The outplaced workforce has so far received payment in two parts comprising 31.3% and 22.5% as against a 100% ex-gratia disbursement envisaged by June 30, 2020 in two equal installments.
