BSNL Claims Data Tariffs In India Are The Lowest In The World

At a time when there have been increased debates in the Indian telecom circles with respect to data tariff and the Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) already set in place for subscribers by Reliance Jio in adherence to TRAI regulations, state-led telco BSNL is now attempting to educate mobile subscribers in India. The telco has stated that mobile data tariffs are amongst the lowest in the world. This statement, via Twitter, has now gone viral on social media.

BSNL's claim

At this juncture, check out BSNL’s tweets, along with replies from netizens (Twitterati). Here, remember that the telco is now on a revival path thanks to a slew of measures announced by the central government. This includes the merger of MTNL with BSNL and a wholesome revival package that would result through the monetization of assets and sovereign bonds.

Now, whether or not data tariffs in India are the lowest in the world, it is certainly worth noting that innovations in the country's telecom sector are at an all-time high. A testament to this fact is the recent spate of 4G-enabled feature-phones that have now penetrated increasingly even in the rural areas. These offer all essential applications (apps) such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube. Some of such feature phones even let users watch their favourite TV shows. These innovations are now slowly going brand-agnostic.

In related BSNL news, the telco is now aggressively pitching for users to avail its Rs 1699 unlimited plan. This is now active with an extended validity of 90 days and is valid for 455 days. It offers 250 minutes of voice calls free per day, along with 2GB data per day, and 100 text messages.
