The state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on Thursday informed that the Maharashtra
State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has restored
electricity supply to all its 15 telephone exchange centres and mobile
towers in the district following intervention by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
With no power supply to different installations of the telecom major, the BSNL employees union had sought CM’s intervention urging him to look into the issue considering the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
According to a BSNL official, Fadnavis gave directives to the MSEDCL on Wednesday night to restore power at all those exchange centres where the supply was snapped. In Nashik district, the state power utility had disconnected power supply to 15 telephone exchange centres and mobile towers of BSNL for not paying dues of over Rs3.5 crore.
The power supply disconnection had affected over 3,500 landline and broadband users across the district. BSNL general manager Nitin Mahajan confirmed that the BSNL employees union had sought CM’s intervention on the issue.
“The
problem was almost in all districts of Maharashtra. After the CM’s
directive, the power supply has been restored by MSEDCL,” he said.
BSNL is facing cash crunch as it has recorded substantial drop in its revenue during the current fiscal and officials have blamed the government for its policy and no efforts to strengthen the state-owned company.
“We are also making efforts to clear the dues of the MSEDCL. We have already paid some dues and clear the remaining dues as we get revenue through payments of bills by the consumers,” BSNL official said.
According to BSNL official, the telecom utility has been demanding 4G spectrum for BSNL for the past one year to compete with private telecom companies, but it is yet to receive the spectrum.
“Moreover, government has also denied BSNL to raise funds through loans from banks. We need a push from the government to improve things in the telecom major,” the official said.
